Grecian Plays

1) Describe the kinds of dramas that were performed in the theaters of ancient Greece.
There were two kinds of plays that were performed in Ancient Greece, tragedies and comedies. Tragedies were plays containing themes about war, love, betrayal, and sadness. The tragedies contained a main character which was usually a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a person who has a flaw such as excessive pride that led to them failing in their mission in the play. Aeschylus, Sophocles, and  Euripides were the main authors of tragedies and they wrote over 180 plays. Comedies were the complete opposite of tragedies, they were plays containing loads of humor about things such as politics and even politicians themselves. Aristophanes was the first playwright to write comedies such as The Birds and Lysistrata.

b. OR… Describe the similarities between an ancient Greek production and a film you have seen recently. The Greek production – and the film – can be either a comedy or a tragedy.
A few weeks go I saw the play Wicked at the Hippodrome theater. This play reminds me of a Grecian tragedy. This is because one of the main characters in the play was a tragic hero. The character, Elpheba, wants to try and succeed in exposing the wizard of Oz for trying to silence the animals in Oz (who could talk). However, in her attempts to stop the wizard, she is blinded by her goals and is tricked by the wizard. This causes Elpheba to have to run away and hide so she isn't killed. Elpheba was a hero with a tragic flaw of caring too much for others, causing her to have to hide and leave everyone she loves.
3) Find an online image of a theater from ancient Greece, post it to your blog, and describe it in a few sentences.
Theatre at Segesta, restored (With images) | Ancient greek theatre ...
This is an ancient Grecian theater. The theater looks much like a modern day stadium, the plays would occur in the center of the theater and the people would sit in the stands. There were thousands of places to sit, leading me to believe that the plays in Ancient Greece were quite popular. The building along the backside of the stadium looks like it could be backstage where the players would change costumes, get props, etc.
