Definitions

Republic: A form of government in which power rests wit citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.
Patricians: Wealthy landowners who held most of the power.
Plebeians: Common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population.
Tribunes: Representatives elected by the plebeians who protected their rights from unfair acts of the patrician officials.
Consuls: Government officials who commanded the army and directed the government. They could only serve for one term every ten years.
Senate: Aristocratic branch of Rome's government containing legislative and administrative functions. 300 members were chosen from Roman society to serve in this branch of government.
Dictator: A leader with absolute power when it comes to making laws and commanding the army, power only lasted for six months; dictators were only elected during times of crisis.
Legions: Military units used by the Romans; they contained 5,000 infantry members with a cavalry supporting them.
Punic Wars: The three wars fought between Rome and Carthage between 264 and 146 B.C.
Hannibal: A Carthaginian general who was a very good military strategist and attempted to capture Rome during the Punic wars, but failed.
