Grecian Geography
All great civilizations were located on water such as:
Mesopotamia- settled along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Egypt- Settled along the Nile River.
India- Settled along the Indus River
China- Settled along the Huang He River
Identify these places on a map of Ancient Greece:
Aegean Sea: The sea between Asia Minor and Greece, east of Greece.
Ionian Sea: The sea that is directly west of Greece and Delphi.
Adriatic Sea: North of the Ionian Sea
Peloponnesus: Large chunk of land south of Greece and north of Sparta and Crete.
Athens: Located on the Tip of Greece, south of the Aegean Sea and Thebes.
Sparta: Close to the tip of Peloponnesus, south of Gulf of Corinth.
Crete: Large island to the south/ southeast of Greece
Asia Minor: Large piece of land east of Greece on the other side of the Aegean Sea.
Macedonia: North of Greece and right above Mt. Olympus, large piece of land.
What Bodies of Water surround Greece?: Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Sea of Crete, Adriatic Sea, Gulf of Corinth.
-Athens and Sparta are located relatively close to each other, they could visit the other's city-state quite easily, they are both on the coast of the Aegean Sea.
Significance of Geography in Greece:
-Mountains covered 3/4 of Greece.
-There were about 2000 islands in the Ionian and Aegean Seas.
-Mountainous terrain led to many difficulties such as only 20% of Greece's land being arable and unification difficulties.
-Terrain led to Greece having many skilled sailors, shipbuilders, farmers, metalworkers, weavers, and potters.
-The lack of resources in Greece led to colonization and trade to obtain these resources.
