Directions: Before viewing the film, read each question below so you know what information and ideas you should be looking for as you watch Episode 3. Record your answers to each question by providing as many facts, details, and examples as possible to answer each question. Be prepared to discuss your answers with the class
1)According to Jared Diamond, what allowed Europeans to develop the power necessary to conquer (take over) large portions of the world?

Europeans had an abundance of domestic plants and animals which allowed them to be able to develop, cities, nations, and colonies abroad.

2)Why were the Europeans who settled the South African cape(tip) so successful? Describe two reasons.

The cape and Europe lied at similar latitudes from the equator, making the temperature and climate almost the same. This allowed for europeans to be able to grow prosperous crops and make prosperous settlements because they were already used to the climate and growing conditions.

3)How did disease allow the Europeans to conquer the native populations in the Americasand in the Africancape?

Throughout centuries europeans had been exposed to diseases through their domestic animals which over time caused human diseases that they were able to develop resistance to, however when they went to different places in the Americas and the African Cape, these settlers didn't have the resistance and as a result became affected by the diseases.

4)The Europeans who settled the tropical areas of the African continent introduced killer germs to the native populations. However, Europeans also suffered from the effects of germs native to Africa. Describe how native African germs worked against the European settlers.

As the europeans moved north into the tropics there were indigenous diseases that were unique to there, these diseases led to the deaths of europeans and their livestock which were a main part of crop growth. However, African cattle had developed resistance overtime to these tropical diseases, eventually passing the resistance to the tropic africans, allowing them to survive.

5)How did the native Africans protect themselves from the germs that caused diseases such as Smallpox and Malaria? Give specific examples cited in the film.

Small pox originally passed over from cattle to man. Native Africans were constantly around the cattle which could have contained small pox, causing the Africans to become used to the disease and even develop vaccinations for it. Native africans were able to develop antibodies against malaria, also the africans settled in high, dry locations away from the areas where mosquitoes breed, and they lived in small, spread out communities to limit disease transmission.

6)How has the colonization (European take over) of Africa created countries filled with disease? Give specific examples from the film.

The europeans ways of close city living instead of the African way of spaced out, small towns caused for more people to be in close proximity of one another, allowing for easier spread of disease. For example, in Zambia, there are many modern cities and towns with many people all close to one another.

7)A)Wha is the number one public health problem in Zambia? Malaria. B) Who are the people mainly affected by this? Children.

8)How has disease made poverty (poorness) worse in many African countries such as Zambia?
The economies in many African countries are being affected because mothers who would normally be productively working are not at their jobs because they're caring for sick children.

9)According to data from the film, how has Malaria effected the overall growth in Africa over the last 50 years?

There is a one percent negative growth in Africas economic rate due to less people being able to work and be productive.

10)Describe how other tropical countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have developed rich economies despite having many of the same geographical and health problems faced by African nations.

These countries were able to understand their environment and the burden of geography and the germs that come with it, allowing them to almost completely get rid of malaria where they live, which transformed the way they lived and the economies of the countries.
