In today's learning objective we had to define multiple terms in order to understand how location is described by geographers. Location is a particular place or position. One of these terms was place, this is the physical and human aspects of a location and is also a theme of geography. This term is related to toponyms which are the names of a place, site which is the description of a places features, and situation which is a place's environmental conditions. These terms help to describe where a location is because it can help geographers know where a place is and what's around it so they can describe it in relation to the things around it or the places around it. They can also help to differentiate between different areas on Earth.

The second learning objective was to identify and describe the three ways geographers describe location. These ways were actually defined in the terms above, they are toponyms, site, and situation. Geographers use toponyms in order to give a name to the place they're trying to describe in order to distinguish it from the other places in the world so people don't get confused. Site is used in order to describe the features of a place. This allows geographers to describe specific cultures and human activity in an area so people can look on thematic or political maps and easily spot areas with these characteristics. Finally, situation is used in order to describe the environmental features of a place which help to differentiate between different land features and narrow places down to help others find the correct one. Specific environmental features can also further describe where place is because it is only in that specific place.

We also had to put these skills that we learned in our learning objectives to the test by choosing our best location from three different maps in different time periods of which were 1650, 1830, and 1880. In the 1650 map, I chose location C as the best location for many reasons, for example this location was close to freshwater for survival, good farmland to grow food and cash crops, an opening to the ocean in order to go and trade with Europe, and it is not right on the open ocean so it isn't as prone to sea attacks or hurricanes than other settlements. This settlement was closest to the most valuable materials, which is why I deemed it best fit. For 1830 I chose location A. This is because during this time period the industrial revolution was beginning and it was important to have a strong source of power. This settlement was right on a waterfall which has a lot of energy and force that it exerts that can be used for power. No other settlement was close to a waterfall so this location would be best for the needs of the people. Finally, for the 1880 map I chose location C. This is because during this time period railroads were the main method of transportation and transporting goods and this location is very close to coal so the trains can have food, only a river away from good farmland so that the trains can have materials to travel and trade with, and an opening to the ocean to trade any materials received from the trains.
